Our Lives Will Change Forever - April 2, 09

As I look at the countdown ticker on my desktop it reminds me each morning that the days of just the two of us our quickly coming to an end.  That thought brings both excitement and fear!  I have been told that a baby is so much different than a dog.  You can leave the dog at home when you go out to eat or shopping, a dog doesn't cry all night long, a dog doesn't wear diapers or make a mess around the dinner table, a dog doesn't need a bunch of clothes and shoes.  But with all of that being said...we are ready to include a new little life in our fast pace world.  It is going to be a blast to go on family walks, shopping together, travel as a family, and read the Bible before bed each night.  It is going to be awesome to come home to all my girls (Natalie, Bailee, and Annie - our dog) each day and get a hug and kiss from each one.  My heart will be overwhelmed with joy when we get to bring our precious miracle to church for the very first time.  I know that my love, my priorities, my attention, my energy level, and my bank account will forever change...but this is what we have been praying for for so many years.  We praise God for the miracle of life and the change she will bring in our home forever!

 Parent/Teen Conference - April 9, 09

Back in the Spring of 2004 the Lord gave me a burden for a conference that was not being done any where else across this country.  As I began to pray I asked the Lord to give me direction and vision to develop the Parent/Teen Conference.  Many churches, camps, and schools will host a teen conference that is geared to meet the spiritual needs of a teenager, but I felt as if there was something missing.  There was - it was mom and dad!  The teenager will get his heart right with the Lord and make great spiritual steps and then all of that is squelched by a mom and dad who are not supportive.  So we decided with the Lord's leading that we would provide a conference where mom, dad, and teenager can come and be under the preaching of the Word of God.  Messages and workshops that were aimed at meeting the needs  of the home and the relationship of parent/teen.  It is a two day conference that begins at supper on Friday and ends by mid afternoon on Saturday.  The conference includes preaching, workshops, displays from Christian colleges, skits, games, awesome food, notebooks, and helpful resources. November 2009 will be our third conference of this kind and we are praying the Lord will do something great and exciting through this event. More information regarding the conference is available here on the website.  Please take time to register and be a part of something special the Lord wants to do in the lives of your family.

February 16, 08 - God is Love

I want to extend my appreciation to you for your prayers and encouragement during our mini-campaign for Valentines SWORD.  Our prayer was to see first time visitors at SWORD that night and see God do a mighty work.  By faith we prayed daily at 3:16 PM, by faith we invited friends, and by faith we prepared.  It was funny to see all the different places and circumstances I was in during the week and a half of praying every afternoon at the allotted time:  I was in the middle of a nap, working in the yard, studying, staff meeting, Nursing Home service, in the church van on the road, and in the middle of a home project.  But regardless we paused to pray and ask God to save.
The Wednesday night service was packed – about 78 teenagers (9 visitors) 15 of our regulars out with sickness or gone – the spirit was exciting that night.  As we began the message I could sense that many Christians had been praying, because teens became quiet and listening intently, distractions were minimum, and the Spirit gave great freedom to preach.  The text was John 3:16, the theme was the “Love of God.”  The verse begins with God and ends with eternal life while the whole text in saturated with love’s lasting legacy.  As the invitation was given not one raised their hand for salvation, but many of our own teens raised their hands and made a commitment to be more conscious of telling others about Jesus.
Some would say it was a discouraging night because no one was saved, but that is not valid.  It was the kind of night that God intended.  Teens heard the gospel, the seed was planted in many hearts; teens were reminded, reminded to tell others about the saving knowledge of Christ.  It gave our SWORD group (teens, parents, and youth staff) the opportunity to be stretched a little – many of you committed yourselves to pray everyday at 3:16 PM – wasn’t that fun?  It was a neat experience!  I am challenged to this time of praying and emphasizing in my own life more often.  “Pray without ceasing”  because we truly “have not because we ask not.”
It was a great blessing to me to see parents, teens, youth staff and many more behind this with prayer and support.   We have no reason to be discouraged – we just do the witnessing – God does the saving.
I have no doubt – He’s not done yet.

January 10, 08 - Happy New Year

Wow, I can't believe that a new year is already here!  Every year I like to set aside some time to gather my thoughts and goals for the new year.  I am excited about what the Lord has in store for the Student Ministry of Mikado.  My prayer is that God will do some great things in the hearts and lives of the teenagers in SWORD.  Praise God for what HE accomplished at this year's Winter Retreat.  Many of the teens who attended made spiritual decisions during the weekend.  Next month we will conduct our first ever "Underground Church" activity.  I believe this will be an evening of fun-filled excitement and yet an eye-opening experience for all those involved.
We are starting a new sermon series in SWORD entitled, "Developing HABITS that will change your life."  My desire is to guide the young people to learn how to independently grow closer to the Lord now and well beyond their teen years.  We all have habits in our life, you know those things which we "automatically" do - yea, you know what they are - so what about some spiritual habits?  Habits like spending daily time with God, scriptural memorization, tithing, accountability, involvement in God's work and Bible study.
Happy New Year and let's make 2008 a great year spiritually!

December 13, 07 - Remembering Dustin Bass

Thursday, December 6, 2007 is a date that will never leave my memory for as long as I live.  That afternoon Pastor Smith and I received a phone call at the office that no one ever wants to get.  The voice on the other line told us the tragic news of a 19 year-old young man named Dustin Bass passing away in his sleep.  This was the guy who I had in my youth group for over 5 years; this was the guy who went to South Dakota on our Mission Trip back in 2003; this was the guy who didn't miss camp, winter retreats, or any opportunity to be involved in the youth group.  And now he was gone - gone from our presence and into the presence of our God.  The funeral service was Monday afternoon and over 300 people gathered at Mikado Baptist Church to pay their last repsects to Dustin and his family.  I had the privilege to participate in the funeral and graveside and gave a testimony of the life of Dustin.  Here is an excerpt from my testimony at his funeral:

"Today we all gather together to celebrate the life of a fine young man by the name of Dustin Bass. As the news of his passing quickly spread Thursday afternoon and Friday morning all who heard of the tragedy shed a tear for the loss of such a precious life. There is no doubt that in the last few days many have had their minds flooded with memory after memory of times spent with Dustin – at home, school, church, and work. To those he had the opportunity to spend time with; Dustin has left a lasting impression of a true friend, companion and warrior. He was always strong with whatever he had to face in life, he was always dependable no matter the circumstance, he was always tender hearted no matter the struggle. To all he encountered he was a friend – he was always very respectful, loving, and servant minded.

I had the privilege of being Dustin’s youth pastor for over 5 ½ years. In that time I have seen God work through this young man and mold him as a servant of Christ. Although he wasn’t perfect – just like all of us – I could see him try over and over again to pursue that which was right. I remember the Sunday night that he stood in this very pulpit and preached his very first sermon. He worked on that for weeks and we met over and over again to practice, tweak, and get it just right. I was so proud of him that night. I’ll never forget the fun times we shared as he would jump out and scare me, come up behind me and jump on my back, or the times he would get me with one of his tricks – man I sure will miss that. I’ll never forget the time me, Dustin, Scott, and Brian went golfing – we all were having a rough day out there but none the less still enjoying it. Time in the woods searching for golf balls can be fun. We were on this very difficult par 5 with a beautiful lake right in front of us. On our second shot we needed to get a good lick on the ball to send it over the lake. After I hit mine in the lake it was Dustin’s turn to do a little better. He got up there and took a big swing – and he missed the ball, so he tried it again, missed the ball a second time. So now with great determination…and sweaty hands he swung as hard as he could. But the club went further than the ball. That club went high in the air and FAR – right into the middle of the lake. We laughed so hard about that one for weeks after. Then there was the time he decided to throw a whole cup of gasoline on our bon fire in the backyard – it blew him back 10 feet. One afternoon he drove up to the church on his four-wheeler and wanted to give me a ride – so like the moron I am I got on the back and boom we took off so fast – he about threw me off and all he could do was laugh – I said quit laughing and concentrate on driving boy. I will miss the lunches we shared talking about life, with its struggles and battles, its joys and peaks. He would call me and say, Hey Pastor Pete, you want to go get some lunch – I’d say sure whose treat – he would say oh I thought maybe you would want to. And then came the day he paid for me – he treated me good to El Cotija.

There are so many stories we all could tell and I would encourage you to take those memories and cherish them in your heart – for maybe we have lost the earthly being of our friend and family member Dustin Bass – but we have not lost him forever. He will remain in our hearts and minds – and we look forward to being reunited with him again one day. Dustin thank you for the memories – the laughs, the tears and the joy – we love you and will miss you dearly."

Life truly is but a vapor - oh that we might cherish the days the Lord gives to us!

November 7, 07 - Parent/Teen Conference

I am so excited about this coming weekend's Parent/Teen Conference at our Church.  This is the second time we have done this type of conference and from my research I have found no one doing anything like this.  The Lord laid on my heart in 2004 to connect parents with their teenager for a weekend of recharging, recreation and refreshment.  This conference is designed with relationships and spiritual walk as the forefront focal points.  The speakers we have lined up for this year are experienced and ready to charge our attendees with the instruction of God's Word.  Please pray about getting involved in the years ahead with this dynamic and exciting conference.

September 20, 07 - Opening Entry

Wow!  It is amazing all that goes into getting this new website up and running.  I am excited about the resource that this site will be to our teens, parents, and outsiders looking in to see our group.  There are some things that we are diligently working on - still working on getting a photo album, weekly poll, interactive calendar, a sign up form for activities, and a requested audience form for your special events.

I did want to give you one quick thought that I trust will encourage you today.  I am in the middle of two great books.  The first one is The 17 Essential Qualities of a Team Player by John Maxwell (the youth staff and support team are reading through this together).  The second is Facing Your Giants by Max Lucado.  In the first chapter there was something that jumped out at me and really encouraged me.  The thought is based on when we face our GIANTS in life (finances, education, temptation, discouragement, etc) what are we focusing on.  Lucado brings out this neat point: Focus on Giants - we stumble, Focus on God - our giants tumble.  We do not have to face them alone - as David went out to face Goliath, he went in the strength of the Lord. We too must face them with the power of God!
